Hunter have been making rubber boots in Scotland since 1856. Originally part of the North British Rubber Company, the rubber boot was produced in limited numbers. That is, until the start of World War I, where they were called upon to make a sturdy boot for the trenches, in fact 1,185,036 pairs were made. Again the company was called upon during the Second World War, not only for wellingtons but also gas masks, ground sheets and other rubber products.
The North British Rubber Company continued to prosper after the war and introduced the green Hunter and Royal Hunter Wellingtons during the winter of 1954/55.
In 1966 the North British Rubber Company became Uniroyal Limited and after being bought out a couple of times, in 2004 the management of Hunter bought the footwear side of the business and it is now a freestanding independent company.
Each individual pair is crafted by hand which gurantees the highest standard of finish and workmanship.
